On Tuesday, April 16, the Anti-Defamation League hosted a meeting of the Committee on Terrorism of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. This Committee, chaired by a senior FBI official from Washington, heard presentations from ADL experts on Islamic fundamentalism and domestic terrorism, and saw a demonstration of ADL’s LEARN Web site and new CD-ROM guide to Extremism in America. Following their meeting at ADL’s National Headquarters, the Committee paid a visit to Ground Zero, where two Committee members had lost their lives on September 11.

Members of the Committee who participated in this meeting included representatives from the FBI; the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; the U.S. Secret Service; the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; the U.S. Capitol Police; the U.S. Department of State; the Transportation Department’s Office of Intelligence and Security; the Amtrak Police Department; the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority; the NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department; the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; the Royal Canadian Mounted Police; and a number of large and small police departments from around the country.

Following the conference, Elmer H. Tippett, Jr., Vice President for Public Safety at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, addressed a letter to ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman commending the presentations. Mr. Tippett indicated that he was “pleasantly surprised to learn of the vast capabilities and the assistance your organization is capable of rendering to law enforcement.”
