The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. recently was honored for its partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to deliver anti-bias training to police recruits.
Chief Charles H. Ramsey received the 2001 Civil Rights Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in the training category for his agency's partnership with ADL to create a training program for police recruits.
The ADL program provides law enforcement officers with a history of the Holocaust and offers them an opportunity to examine and understand their personal and professional responsibilities in our pluralistic democracy. Chief Ramsey requires the one-day training of all police recruits, which includes a series of workshops and a visit to the U.S. Memorial Holocaust Museum.
The program's success has led other police departments in the D.C. metro area to adopt similar programs using the ADL model.
