William Milton Cooper, 58, a prominent militia figure
who hosted a shortwave radio program and ran a Web site in which he promoted
anti-government and apocalyptic views, was shot and killed after critically
wounding an Apache County Sheriff’s Deputy in Eager, Arizona.
Cooper, who was wanted on aggravated assault and endangerment charges
stemming from incidents in July and September, was killed in the shootout with
sheriff’s deputies after refusing to surrender on an outstanding warrant for
his arrest.
When confronted in his vehicle by authorities, Cooper drove off the side of
the road and attempted to run over a sergeant. Cooper reportedly drove back to
his house, exited his vehicle, and fired at the officers after refusing to
surrender. An Apache County sheriff’s deputy, Robert Marinez, was shot twice
in the head but was expected to live.
ADL has been monitoring Cooper’s Web site and anti-government broadcasts
for many years. In 1998, Cooper was indicted on federal charges of failing to
pay taxes from 1992 to 1994. He became a fugitive from justice after failing to
appear for a hearing in 1998. Since that time, he has repeatedly vowed that he
would not be taken alive. In a message Cooper wrote to another militia member on
an online militia list this past March, he said:
I will defend myself when they come and try to kill as many as I can
before they kill me. You can all count on me to set an example for future
confrontations with tyranny.
Cooper was renowned by many in the militia movement
for authoring "Behold a Pale Horse," a book in which he wrote about
global conspiracies, some involving aliens. Cooper claimed that the U.S.
government was responsible for the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal
Building in Oklahoma City. James Nichols, brother of Oklahoma bombing
co-defendant Terry Nichols, testified in a 1996 pretrial hearing that Timothy
McVeigh listened to Cooper’s radio broadcasts for inspiration.
Cooper more recently made assertions that Islamic militants were not to blame
for the attacks of September 11. On September 15, 2001, Cooper posted an article
on his Web site titled, "Who Benefits? The question no one dares to
ask!" in which he strongly suggests that the U.S. and Israeli governments
were behind the attacks.
So who benefits? The answer is obvious and very disturbing. Everyone in
the oil business will benefit, especially the Bush family and their business
partners. Everyone in the defense industrial complex will benefit. The
United Nations will benefit. The State of Israel will benefit bigtime.
Tyranny in the name of security will benefit and rule over the American
People. And don’t be surprised if many Patriots and politically incorrect
Americans begin to disappear overnight like the Jews and Gypsys in Nazi
Germany.
