Anti-Israel Boat Campaign Challenges Israel's "Siege of Gaza"

The Free Gaza Movement (FGM) has received support, endorsement and organizational help from a wide array of organizations and individuals.
Some of FGM's success may be attributed to the active role of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a grassroots movement that spreads anti-Israel propaganda and misinformation and voices support for those who engage in armed resistance against Israel.
ISM made its media team available to FGM and posted FGM's press releases on its own Web site. As a result, FGM was able to reach an established audience of ISM activists and supporters.
In addition, several notable ISM figures were heavily involved in organizing the campaign and the various missions, and many other ISM activists have shown particular interest in supporting and participating in FGM.
Paul Larudee, an FGM co-founder, runs the ISM chapter in Northern California and has volunteered with ISM in the West Bank. Larudee, his ISM chapter and FGM shared a mailing address in El Cerrito, California, for much of FGM's initial planning stages.
Larudee participated in the group's first mission in August 2008 and stated upon their arrival, "We're the first ones in 41 years to enter Gaza freely - but we won't be the last. We welcome the world to join us and see what we're seeing." Since his return, Larudee has given multiple presentations to local audiences about the FGM trip and about Israel's "siege" of Gaza.
Huwaida Arraf, a co-founder of ISM, has led several of the trips to Gaza and has provided significant administrative help to FGM, including sending out frequent press releases and updates to the group's listserve, requesting donations on behalf of the group, and providing interviews to the media.
Neta Golan, another ISM co-founder, was among the Israeli passengers on the fifth FGM trip. Golan was arrested by Israeli border authorities at the Erez crossing between Gaza and Sderot for entering Gaza without a permit, which Israeli law prohibits.
Although FGM has received backing and support from ISM, other groups and individuals have also played a crucial role in planning, fundraising for and executing FGM's missions.
Jeff Halper, director of the Jerusalem-based Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD), participated in FGM's first sailing in August 2008. Halper's presence was symbolically significant as he was one of two Israeli Jews on board and he has spoken proudly about his involvement, saying "What we've done shows that people can do what governments should have done. If people stand up against injustice, we can truly be the conscience of the world." Halper was detained by Israeli authorities for entering Gaza when he attempted to return to Israel via the Erez Crossing on August 26, 2008, but was released after about a day.
14 Friends of Palestine, a Marin County, California-based group, has endorsed FGM and devoted much of its Web site content to promoting FGM's mission to "break the siege of Gaza." 14 Friends has posted FGM press releases and articles, praised its efforts and organized events on its behalf. On August 21, 2008, in conjunction with FGM's first sailing, 14 Friends organized a demonstration and vigil in San Francisco in support of the trip.
South Bay Mobilization (SBM), a San Jose-based antiwar group, has shown particular interest in promoting FGM, and Darlene and Donna Wallach, activists associated with the group, have participated in FGM missions. Darlene Wallach was one of three FGM participants arrested in November while accompanying Gazan fishermen on their boats off Gaza port.
Similarly, the Connecticut-based Middle East Crisis Committee (MECC), run by Stanley Heller, has consistently supported FGM. The group organized multiple events in August, including a solidarity march on August 23, 2008, the day the first boat arrived in Gaza.
