Dear Delegate Hargrove:
We are writing to express our deep concern over remarks attributed to you in the Daily Progress. According to this press report, during a debate over the slavery apology measure during a session of the House of Delegates on Tuesday, January 16, you stated, “Are we going to force the Jews to apologize for killing Christ?” If accurate, it is an outrageous and bigoted statement. This inflammatory and baseless accusation perpetuates an ancient canard that has been the basis for centuries of persecution of, and violence against, the Jewish people.
Regardless of the outcome of the debate in the House of Delegates on an apology for slavery, we believe that you owe the Jewish community and the people of Virginia an apology for your statement from the floor of the House.
