Syndicated Columnist Paul Craig Roberts Promotes Anti-Semitism
Overview
Posted: June 25, 2009
Paul Craig Roberts is a syndicated columnist whose work on economics has been published in a variety of mainstream publications, including The New York Times and The National Review. Since 2007, his columns have increasingly focused on criticism of Israel and Jews and often conjure up anti-Semitic canards, making them popular with fringe publications on both the left and the right.
Far-right sources that have published Roberts' columns on Jews include American Free Press, an overtly anti-Semitic weekly newspaper, and VDare, a racist Web site. CounterPunch, a far-left anti-Zionist newsletter, and Antiwar, a conspiracy-oriented, anti-Semitic Web site, also often feature Roberts' anti-Semitic columns. Roberts has also been interviewed on the Political Cesspool, a white supremacist radio show.
Like many other contemporary anti-Semites, Roberts frames his anti-Semitism as criticism of Israel and the country's supporters. His published views, however, go far beyond any criticism of Israel's policies, regularly charging Israeli or Jewish control of the U.S. government and media and comparing Israel to the Nazi regime.
During the years of his greatest national exposure, Roberts' columns were not anti-Semitic. Although it is not entirely clear why Roberts shifted to overt anti-Semitism, the timing of his first column focusing on Jews offers some clues. The November 2007 column, entitled "The Lobby," appeared after the publication of books by President Jimmy Carter and Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, which focused on the alleged power of the Israel lobby in this country. Roberts may have been emboldened by the success of these books since his column focused mostly on Walt and Mearsheimer's book, with Roberts claiming that it had "broken the Israel lobby's power to suppress truth."
Since 2006, no mainstream publications other than the Dearborn, Michigan-based Arab American News, a dual language—English and Arabic—weekly with a history of publishing anti-Semitic articles, have published his columns.
