In His Own Words

In "Criminalizing Criticism of Israel," published in CounterPunch on May 7, 2009, Roberts argued that the true intent of a hate crimes bill recently passed by the House that makes no reference to Israel was to ensure that "any facts or truths that cast aspersion upon Israel will simply be banned." The ultimate goal of the legislation then, according to Roberts, was to "destroy any hope of America having an independent foreign policy in the Middle East that serves American, rather than Israeli, interests." He also tacked implicit Holocaust denial on to this particular column, asking, "Why does the Israel lobby consider the case for the Holocaust to be so weak that it is impermissible to study the facts and to reach an independent conclusion?"

In "Wars, Shysters Sap the 'Super' Out of 'Superpower,' published in American Free Press on March 30, 2009, he wrote that the United States is "the chattel goods of the Israel lobby," concluding with the question, "Is America a superpower, or is America a rapidly declining country destroyed by gratuitous wars and shyster banksters?" (The title of the column on his syndicate's Web site is simply, "Israel's American Chattel.")

In a column entitled "Bush Leaves Bloody Wake As Disastrous Reign Ends" published in the January 19, 2009 issue of American Free Press, Roberts repeatedly claimed that President George W. Bush was controlled by Israel, which supposedly used his support to commit numerous crimes. Specifically, he wrote that Bush was a "puppet of Zionist Israel" and that Bush's polices toward Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist group, had been dictated by his "Israeli masters." He concluded by writing that Obama's election would change nothing, as his "first act [as President-elect] was to put Israel in charge of the White House."

Roberts has employed similar anti-Semitic rhetoric in other syndicated columns, calling the United States an "Israeli colony" on January 23, 2009, writing on April 23, 2008 that "the Iraqi war is a war for Israeli territorial expansion," and charging on January 11, 2008, that only three presidential candidates were not "in Israel's pocket." This type of language has infused Roberts columns since 2007, leading him to make similar charges even when he writes about issues unrelated to Israel or Jews.
