His Excellency Jean-David Levitte
French Ambassador to the United States
French Embassy
Washington, DC
Dear Mr. Ambassador:
This is to express concern over the recent desecration of a Muslim cemetery near Strasbourg, along with other anti-Muslim actions, particularly in Alsace.
We have been in touch with you on previous occasions to convey our concern over recurrent anti-Semitic incidents in France, and we appreciate that in recent months your government has taken meaningful action, both in law enforcement and in public discussion and education, to oppose both anti-Jewish actions and anti-Semitic teaching.
As a civil rights organization that from its inception has opposed all kinds of ethnic or religious discrimination and persecution, we are equally alarmed when – as in this case – the institutions of other faiths are attacked. I hope that your government will be fully responsive to the Muslim community’s needs and demands for security. Only when government and public institutions defend the rights and needs of all citizens, particularly minorities, are life and hope secure. We ask respectfully that you will communicate our feelings to your government.
Best regards,

Sincerely,
Abraham H. Foxman
