ADL Resolution on Iran's Development of Nuclear Weapons As adopted at ADL's 2005 National Commission Meeting, November 3, 2005 in New York City. Posted: November 10, 2005

     WHEREAS, the Islamic Republic of Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism, whose president recently called for the eradication of the State of Israel, is in the process of developing nuclear weapons capability;  

WHEREAS, an Iran armed with nuclear warheads poses a grave danger to the State of Israel, to the region and, indeed, to the world;

WHEREAS, the United States, the EU3 (France, Britain and Germany) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have all concluded that Iran is not complying with its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty;

WHEREAS, negotiations between the EU3 and Iran have been obstructed by the intransigence of the Iranian regime;

WHEREAS, in the coming weeks, the IAEA will deliberate referring Iran to the UN Security Council;

WHEREAS, Iran has defied world opinion by resuming uranium processing and there is a shared concern that Iran is covertly engaging in enrichment activities in order to produce weapons-grade uranium;

WHEREAS, there are credible concerns that, in the absence of effective international intervention, Iran may produce nuclear warheads within the next two to four years;

WHEREAS, international concerns about the nuclear program have been exacerbated following the election in June of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a conservative hardliner, as President who shortly after his election appointed Ali Larijani, another hardliner, as chief nuclear negotiator; Therefore be it

RESOLVED that the Anti-Defamation League calls on the international community to be resolute in opposing Iran's nuclear program by backing tough sanctions against Iran's leadership in order to bring about an end to uranium enrichment activities; and establish an effective monitoring regime which would cover Iran's nuclear facilities, external transfers of technology and resources relevant to its nuclear program.
