ADL Letter to President Vincente Fox:
Offensive Mexican Stamp Should Be Removed

  July 7, 2005

His Excellency Vicente Fox Quesada
President of México
Los Pinos
México, D.F.
MÉXICO

Dear Mr. President:

Your country’s release of a postage stamp featuring Memin Pinguin has rightly provoked the indignation of people of many races and nationalities. However harmless or even likeable the image of Memin Pinguin may seem to you, it nevertheless is offensive to Blacks and concerned individuals of all races and ethnicities. Stereotyping against one ethnic group is harmful to people of all ethnic groups.

We urge you to remove the stamp from circulation and take the leadership in turning this unfortunate affair into an opportunity to promote harmonious relations and genuine dialogue between different ethnicities.

Sincerely,

Abraham H. Foxman
National Director
