A college student in Atlanta has been charged with providing material support for terrorism, according to an unsealed federal indictment.

A federal grand jury in Atlanta indicted Syed Haris Ahmed, 21, on March 23, 2006, the same day he was arrested by the FBI, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Atlanta.  Ahmed, a naturalized American citizen whose family is from Pakistan, is an engineering student at Georgia Tech University

“The charge against Mr. Ahmed is serious and involves national security and will be prosecuted with that in mind,” U.S. Attorney David Nahmias said in a news release.  Nahmias said Ahmed attended a terrorist training camp in Pakistan for two months in 2005.

“This is the first international terrorism charge filed in Georgia,” Nahmias said.  “Mr. Ahmed knowingly and unlawfully attempted to provide, conspired to provide materials, support, and resources…”  Ahmed entered a plea of not guilty on April 19 and is being held by federal authorities at an undisclosed location.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force worked with many different government agencies in the U.S. and abroad during the course of the investigation, according to the FBI’s Atlanta office.

Another U.S. citizen from the Atlanta area, Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, 19, was arrested on April 17, 2006, in Bangladesh.  Sadequee was handed over to the FBI and put on a plane to New York, where he is expected to face charges.  Sadequee works for the Atlanta-based non-profit group, Raksha. 

It is unclear if Sadequee’s arrest is connected to the indictment against Ahmed.
