Three Men Arrested in Germany for Terror Plot Targeting US Interests

Update: A fourth suspect, Attila Selek, has been arrested in Turkey in connection with the foiled terror plots. Germany is seeking extradition of Selek from Turkey.

Posted: September 19, 2007

Three men have been arrested for plotting large-scale terrorist attacks against sites visited by Americans in Germany, including the Frankfurt airport, discos and a U.S. military base.

Two Muslim converts from Germany, Fritz Gelowicz and Daniel Martin Schneider, and Adem Yilmaz, a Turk living in Germany, were arrested on September 4, 2007, and charged with plotting to detonate large bombs with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide.  The men reportedly imported three trucks with French license plates in preparation for the attacks.

German police say they are looking for dozens of other possible plotters in connection with the alleged conspiracy.

According to German officials, the three suspects are linked to the Islamic Jihad Group (IJG), a splinter organization from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group by the U.S. in May 2005.

Gelowicz, 28, the alleged leader of the IJG terror cell in Germany, was raised Catholic in Ulm, Germany, and converted to Islam at the age of 18.  He was reportedly radicalized at the Multicultural House in Ulm by Tolga Duerbin, who was arrested last month by German authorities in Frankfurt and charged with incitement to violence.  Gelowicz is also believed to have met with Mohammed Atta, one of the September 11 hijackers, according to German officials.

Daniel Martin Schneider, 22, is from Neunkirchen, Germany and Adem Yilmaz, 29, was born in Turkey but had been living in Germany.

According to German officials, all three suspects attended terrorist training camps in Pakistan in 2006.
