Renewed Terrorist Threats against Israel and Jews over Gaza

Posted: February 6, 2009

In response to Israel's military action in Gaza to stop Hamas rockets from being fired at Israeli towns and cities, Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar exhorted Palestinians to target Israeli civilians and Jews abroad, saying "The Zionists…have legitimized the killing of their people all over the world by killing our people."

Several other terrorist groups and their supporters have increased their threats against Israel and Jews as well. For example, Al Qaeda’s second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, called for attacks against Israel and the West in an audio message released on February 3, 2009.  In his message, titled “The Sacrifices of Gaza and Plotting Against It,” Zawahiri urged Muslims to “head to the battlefields” and fight the enemies of Islam, including Israel, but also “the entire Zionist-Crusader alliance, and leading it is the evil master America.”

Zawahiri released a similar audio message in January 2009 urging Muslims to "strike the interests of the enemies of Islam - namely, the Christians and the Jews - wherever and by whatever means you can." Zawahiri expressed Al Qaeda's solidarity with Palestinians: "My Muslim brothers and mujahideen in Gaza and all over Palestine, with the help of Allah we are with you in the battle, we will direct our strikes against the crusader Jewish coalition wherever we can."

Al Qaeda leader Abu Yahya al-Libi called for attacks in the West in retaliation for what he called the Israeli "annihilation campaign" in Gaza, in a video posted on a Web site commonly used by Islamic militants on January 22, 2009.  In the video, titled "Palestine... Now the Fighting is Fierce," Libi blamed Britain for creating the state of Israel, claiming that they are responsible for any "child who dies in Palestine."  He also urged Muslims to strike America so that they "taste what our brothers and weak folks in Palestine have been tasting."

On January 14, 2009, Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden called for holy war against Israel in an audio message titled "A Call for Jihad to Stop the Aggression on Gaza." Bin Laden urged the "Muslim nation" to defeat the "Zionist entity" and assured the Palestinians that Al Qaeda's "fate is tied to yours in fighting the crusader-Zionist coalition, in fighting until victory or martyrdom." He also stated that "the duty is to urge people to jihad and to enlist the youth into jihad brigades."

Bin Laden, Zawahiri and Libi's messages are the latest in a series of messages by Al Qaeda threatening Jews and Israel. The messages also follow the series of devastating coordinated terror attacks in Mumbai, India, which killed over 170 people and wounded approximately 300 in November 2008. The Mumbai attack was the latest act of terrorism since September 11 to specifically include Jews outside Israel among its targets.

Other terrorist groups and their supporters have joined Hamas and Al Qaeda in threatening Israel and the Jews during Israel's military action in Gaza. For example:

  • Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned that "northern Israel will burn as Gaza is burning" and expressed that "Israel is the enemy of the world of Islam." He also said, "We are ready to sacrifice our souls, our brothers and sisters, our children, our loved ones for what we believe in."
  • Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, a group named for its location in North Africa, has issued explicit calls for Muslims to attack Jews "wherever they are found." The leader of AQIM, Abdelmalek Droukdel, stated that "chasing Jews away and closing down their embassy, is a debt on our shoulders and we have to give our all to pay it back or die." He also announced that their next target is the Israeli Embassy in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott, which was attacked by AQIM in February 2008, wounding three bystanders.
  • Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, an influential Muslim Brotherhood ideologue in Qatar, has increasingly been lashing out at Jews and Israel, including calling on God to "kill them, down to the very last one." Qaradawi gave a Friday sermon, which aired on the Arabic satellite channel Al-Jazeera TV on January 9, 2009, in which he incited violence against the Jews. "Oh Allah," Qaradawi said, "Take this oppressive, Jewish, Zionist band of people…do not spare a single one of them. Oh Allah, count their numbers, and kill them, down to the very last one." Qaradawi also called on Muslims to boycott Starbucks and other stores that he said support Israel. During a rally in Doha, Qatar, on the same day, Qaradawi urged Arab and Muslim leaders to "fear God and defend Palestine, or you will be swept away by history."
  • Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a fugitive Afghan warlord who has been designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) by the U.S., has offered to send thousands of Afghan volunteers to fight in Gaza. Following Hekmatyar's announcement, more than a thousand Afghans reportedly signed up to fight Israel, gathering in a library lined with banners reading "Death to Israel." Hekmatyar, who is chief of the Islamic Hezb-e-Islami party that opposes NATO-led troops in Afghanistan, continued his effort to recruit fighters after Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip, calling for Muslims to attack American troops in Afghanistan because of the U.S.'s financial and military support for Israel. "This war, which we are helping, is not just a war by Tel Aviv, but rather a new American war against Islam," he said.
  • Iranian leaders have also used anti-Semitic and anti-Israel rhetoric in response to Israel's military presence in Gaza. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, declared that "anyone who dies in this holy struggle against World Zionism [is] a martyr."  Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has previously threatened to "wipe Israel off the map," has urged Arabs and Muslims around the world to "confront these aggressors." He even went so far as to address the Israeli soldiers, encouraging them to "protest against your commanders and disobey their orders."
  • Several radical Web sites have posted messages calling to attack Israeli and American interests worldwide as well. On the Shumukh Al-Islam forum, a Web site commonly used by Islamic militants, a post reportedly called for attacks on American and Israeli embassies worldwide, and asked for members of the message board to provide information about these embassies. Several posts followed with addresses, links to the embassies Web sites and pictures.
