To the Editor:
In his review of Zev Chafets' "A Match Made in Heaven," David Klinghoffer heartily seconds the book's barbed attack on American Jewish leaders for our nuanced approach to relations with Evangelical Christians (Books, March 2007).
Chafets' claim that Jewish leaders have "declared war on Evangelical Christianity" is sensationalist and plain wrong.
The Anti-Defamation League has welcomed and encouraged Evangelical support for Israel, particularly at a time when there are serious threats to the Jewish state. However, we have always said that we would not abandon our principles in doing so. When some on the religious right openly call for the "Christianization of America," we have a moral obligation as Jews and as Americans to speak up.
We will continue to embrace Israel's supporters in the Christian community, but we will not do so at the expense of undermining America's core values of religious pluralism and church-state separation.
