ADL Letter to The New York Times

Letters to the Editor
The New York Times

     April 20, 2004

To the Editor:

Despite Lenora Fulani representing herself as a bridge builder between the Black and Jewish communities, her record repeatedly demonstrates that she is not (advertisement, April 18).

Ms. Fulani has stated that Jews "had to sell their souls to acquire Israel and are required to do the dirtiest work of capitalism – to function as mass murderers of people of color – in order to keep it."  She has been a strong supporter of the anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

Ms. Fulani cites the play Crown Heights as evidence of her leadership on Black-Jewish issues. She fails to note that the work falsely attributes to Jews the violence of the 1991 Crown Heights riots; it also inaccurately dramatizes the fight that led to Yankel Rosenbaum's death as being started by Jews.  Ms. Fulani is quoted in the play blaming the violence on "the Chasidim throwing rocks, large rocks."

Far from a "bridge builder," Ms. Fulani has a long record of attempting to sow discord between Blacks and Jews.

  Sincerely,

Abraham H. Foxman
National Director
