In his review of Beenie Man’s new album “Back to Basics,” Baz Dreisinger fails to even mention the violently anti-gay elements in his music (“Zagga Zow!,” July 27). This is deeply disappointing, especially given the Voice’s stature in the fight against homophobia and for the rights of the LGBT community.
Dreisinger states that Beenie Man’s comic gifts make “macho braggadocio so likable.” But there is nothing likeable or funny about the lyric, “I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica/come to execute all the gays” (from the 2000 single “Damn”). Or about his encouraging fans to kill gay DJ’s (2002’s “Bad Man Chi Chi Man”).
Beenie Man says his homicidal taunts merely reflect “Caribbean culture,” as if this excused spreading hatred of anyone. Before promoting his music again without qualification or context, the Voice would do well to recall Michael Musto’s assessment of Beenie Man: “a total horror who promotes the execution of queers in Jamaica.”
