Letters to the Editor
The New York Times

     August 18, 2008

To the Editor:

Although the leadership of Israel's government may be about to change, the deeply felt desire of the Israeli people for lasting peace and security with the Palestinians will not ("Perils of an Israeli Transition," Aug. 18).

The responsibility of the Israeli government to provide for the safety of its people is the paramount consideration of every leader, regardless of the party they belong to or their ideology.  As in every democracy, different elected leaders will bring distinct styles and approaches to the task of governing.  In this regard, Israel resembles every other modern democracy.

Impending change always brings with it a degree of uncertainty.  Yet the suggestion that a new Israeli prime minister might not continue to pursue peace with Israel's neighbors is unwarranted.

The road to Israeli-Palestinian peace has been long and arduous.  The way ahead is complicated and fraught with danger.  Success will only be achieved if the obligation for constructive actions and the burden of living up to responsibilities lay equally on the shoulders of the Israelis and Palestinians, and if these efforts are supported and encouraged by the international community.  Israel cannot be expected to accomplish this alone.

  Sincerely,

The Anti-Defamation League
