Dear Mr. Mills:
We are writing to express our shock over the remarks reportedly made on the air last Thursday by FM 96.9 WTKK personality Jay Severin in which he suggested to "kill all Muslims" as a solution to problems this nation is currently facing. Severin's hate speech requires an unequivocal condemnation from the station. We are further dismayed by press accounts that you may have qualified Severin's remarks by saying that he was referring only to Muslims outside the United States. This additional qualification does nothing to mitigate Severin's offense, and suggests that you may not have fully appreciated its serious adverse impact on the Muslim community.
We recognize that your programming format has your talk show hosts routinely push the envelope in terms of airing controversial viewpoints, and we are regularly contacted by listeners who take offense when lines of civility are crossed. This particular instance, however, stands on its own and calls for prompt and unequivocal repudiation. We are strongly opposed to government censorship, but using a talk-radio format to propose the killing of an entire religious group shows a particularly reckless use of the privilege to hold an FCC license to broadcast.
We would like to be a constructive partner in addressing these issues, but it is important for the entire community that WTKK show leadership in demonstrating an understanding of the problem. We are looking forward to your engaging the public on this matter and to an opportunity to discuss the issue with you directly.
