Introduction: Across the country, interested eyes are turned on the so-called "patriot" movement. Interested pens have also been brought to bear, by a great many talented writers, scholars and professionals. The Militia Watchdog is pleased to be able to bring you some of the fruit of their labors. The Contributors Section contains articles, interviews, and other material donated by journalists, scholars, and other writers interested in heightening public awareness on the patriot movement.

These articles are the intellectual property of their author(s); no attempt to reproduce these writings should be made without gaining the express written consent of the author(s). The opinions expressed within the articles should be considered those of the author(s), and not of The Militia Watchdog.

Contents

  • David Neiwert. Neiwert is a veteran Northwest journalist who has covered the radical right since 1978. He is at work on a book, In God's Country: The Patriot Movement and the Pacific Northwest, scheduled for fall publication.
  • Forrest Johnson. Johnson has recently been searching for some of the legal filings of various "patriot" leaders. He is kind enough to provide readers of The Militia Watchdog with copies.
    • Trochmann Filings. In 1992 John Trochmann, later to become notorious as the leader of the Militia of Montana, declared himself a sovereign citizen by virtue of his being a free white Christian male. Here are the documents he filed.
  • Ilse Bailey. Bailey is a former Texas prosecutor who has been active in fighting the claims of the common law and sovereign citizen movements.
    • Useful Cases for Fighting 'Sovereign Defendant' Cases. Although primarily dealing with Texas, this list of useful precendents for dealing with the bizarre claims of common law courtists and sovereign citizens should be helpful to all prosecutors. Attorneys who can add to this list should contact The Militia Watchdog.
    • Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch... A timely article originally printed in Texas Prosecutor in 1995 on strategies and tactics for dealing with "sovereign citizens."
  • Bernard Sussman.  Sussman is a law librarian in the Washington, D.C., area, who has long taken an interest in the peculiar pseudolegal arguments used by right-wing extremists.
    • Idiot Legal Arguments. This is the most comprehensive listing of extremist legal arguments available anywhere. Plenty of cases, citations, mentions, and anecdotes.
