The population of the United States is
becoming increasingly diverse. Although diversity is one of our nation’s
greatest strengths, it is often accompanied by significant tension and fear.
The need for a pro-active approach in the face of these challenges makes
No Place for Hate® as relevant as ever. No Place for Hate®
is a program that enables people to challenge anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia,
and all forms of bigotry in their communities and schools. It seeks to provide
a model for responding to and preventing acts of hatred and for developing
projects that enhance an appreciation for diversity and foster harmony.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has spent the 20th century dedicated to eradicating anti-Semitism and all forms of bias-motivated hatred. Our mission is to translate democratic ideals into a way of life for all people. We accomplish our mission by confronting and counteracting all forms of anti-Semitism, racism and intolerance. Areas of emphasis include investigating and exposing extremist activity, safeguarding religious freedoms, and building bridges of understanding among racial, religious and ethnic groups. The St. Louis office, which covers Missouri and Southern Illinois, is one of 28 offices nationwide.
No Place For Hate® and The ADL’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute
Constantly striving to develop creative approaches to achieve a just society, in 1985 ADL in Boston created the A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute, to diminish societal acceptance of intolerance by equipping people with the knowledge and understanding needed to challenge prejudice and discrimination. Since September 1987, the A WORLD OF DIFFERENCEÒ Institute St. Louis Project has provided anti-bias and diversity education programs to schools, universities, corporations, community-based organizations and law enforcement agencies. In the past 20 years, the Institute has successfully delivered training programs and workshops to more than 127,000 students and adults across Missouri and Southern Illinois.
At the time the Institute was initiated in the region, there was a large Steering Committee that launched and supported the initial run. The first five years of programming was supported by The Danforth Foundation. Members of the Steering Committee included Channel 4 KMOV, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, and Civic Progress. Many dedicated educators, community leaders and advocates made the beginning of the Institute a great success.
