ADL TO INDONESIA: ISRAELI ARCHERY TEAM MUST BE EQUAL
TO OTHERS IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
New York, NY, July 27, 1995...The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today called
on the Indonesian government to allow the Israeli archery team to participate
in the world championship competition under its own name and flag. The international
competition is scheduled to open August 1 in Jakarta.
"We are shocked at reports that... the Indonesian government has apparently
demanded that Israel compete under a pseudonym," Abraham H. Foxman,
ADL National Director wrote to" Indonesian President Suharto. Invited
by the International Archery Federation, "the Israeli team has every
right to openly compete under its own name and banner," Foxman said.
In asking for President Suharto's response Foxman added, "It is inexplicable
that in these days of growing reconciliations between Israel and her Muslim
neighbors, Israel is once again being treated as a pariah."
ADL also urged James Easton, Chairman of the International Archery Federation
"to resolve this issue so that Israel is permitted to fully participate
in the championship."
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
