ADL Alarmed and Concerned Over The Popularity of Anti-Semitic Tract at Syrian International Book Fair
Jerusalem, Israel, October 24, 2002... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is alarmed and deeply concerned over the popularity of the anti-Semitic book "Matzah of Zion" written by Syrian Defense Minister Tlass at the recent Syrian International Book Fair. This book, in its eighth reprint, perpetuates the age-old anti-Semitic blood libel accusing Jews of using the blood of Arab children to bake the traditional Passover matzah.
"The official Syrian sanction of this book should give pause to all world leaders that Syria, a member of the United Nations Security Council, continues to inculcate its population with anti-Semitism and hatred," said ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman.
"The popularity of this book and the official sanction it receives by Syria’s leaders should alarm all people of conscience. This is yet another glaring and disturbing example of the anti-Semitic incitement that pervades all levels of Syrian society and fosters a climate of hate for coming generations," he added.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
