WHO'S WHO TO ADL: ANTI-SEMITE'S BIOGRAPHY NOW DELETED
New York, NY, June 30, 1995...After the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) alerted
the editors of Marquis Who's Who that one of their 1994 biographees, Willis
Allison Carto, is an anti-Semite and bigot, they removed his biography from
future Marquis publications.
The League wrote Marquis that Carto "founded and continues to run Liberty
Lobby, which is widely recognized as the nation's largest anti-Jewish propaganda
organization," and that in 1979 he "founded the Institute for
Historical Review, a pseudo-academic institution whose business it is to
promote Holocaust denial...."
ADL questioned whether someone whose entire professional life has been devoted
to racial and religious intolerance should be listed among men and women
of genuine philanthropic, educational or other accomplishments.
Carl R. Edolo, Marquis Who's Who Research Editor, responded, "As a
result of your letter and our careful review of the materials you sent us,
we have decided to remove Mr. Carto's biographical data from all future
Marquis Who's Who products."
Gratified by Marquis' swift, responsible action, the League expressed its
hope that the editors will review their screening process so that other
hate figures will not inadvertently gain the unwarranted respectability
of a listing in Who's Who in America.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
