ADL "Extremely Troubled" by Comments from State Department Official
New York, N.Y., October 23, 2001 … Calling comments made by a State Department spokesman "inappropriate" and "contrary to the long-standing American policy," the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today strongly urged respect of Israel's fundamental right to national defense and for the State Department to refrain from calling on Israel to withdraw from Palestinian-controlled areas.
In a letter to Secretary of State Colin Powell, ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman, said:
We are extremely troubled by State Department spokesman Phillip T. Reeker's comments calling on Israel to withdraw from Palestinian-controlled areas and refrain from any further incursions.
We consider such comments to be inappropriate and contrary to the long-standing American policy that Israel has the right to defend itself.
The world is uniting to fight terrorism and unfortunately, the Palestinian Authority has refused to take steps to stem violence and terrorism.
We strongly urge the State Department to respect Israel's fundamental right to take the necessary measures to ensure its security and prevent future terrorist attacks.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
