ADL HONORS MEMORY OF ACADEMY AWARD WINNING DIRECTOR
FRED ZINNEMANN WITH HUMAN RELATIONS FILM AWARD
New York, NY, March 31, 1997...The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today
announced the creation of the ADL/Fred Zinnemann Human Relations Film Award
in honor and recognition of the late Mr. Zinnemann's brilliant career in
the film industry as an Academy-Award winning director.
"This award is an appropriate way to recognize and remember Fred
Zinnemann's important contribution to improving human relations," said
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, "Fred was a master of his
craft who was true to his art, never compromising his integrity. He used
his skill to portray the human condition honestly, holding steadfast to
a high ethical standard. He lived a remarkable life. ADL will miss him,
and I will personally miss his warmth and friendship."
During his 40-year career, Mr. Zinnemann made about 20 films and worked
with stars such as Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn. Five of his films collected
a total of 25 Academy Awards, one of which was his 1948 film "The Search,"
a powerful account of the plight of Europe's displaced children of the
Holocaust.
ADL will present its award annually in recognition of a feature or documentary
film dealing with a human relations theme.
