Mr. Richard Robinson
President and CEO
Dear Mr. Robinson,
We welcome the decision by Scholastic to stop further shipment of the 2012 edition of Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt and to correct and reprint the book, which currently contains a map of a portion of the Middle East in which Israel is situated but does not identify the State of Israel by name. The map in question shows the territorial area of Israel as part of Jordan, while the geographical locations of other nearby countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Libya, are clearly marked.
As of one the world’s leading educational institutions, your publications are read by millions of parents, teachers and children, all of whom rely on Scholastic to provide materials that are factually accurate, unbiased and of the highest caliber. Unfortunately, the map used in this particular publication does not meet that standard.
In addition to printing a corrected version, we believe Scholastic should immediately change the image on the Geronimo Stilton page on your Web site. We also believe it would be helpful to potential customers of the book for the company to issue a statement informing the public about the error and the decision to reprint the book with an accurate map.
Should you wish to discuss this matter further, please do not hesitate to contact me.
