Extremist Language Only Impedes Peace

This letter is in response to an op-ed titled "Israel's Policy of Erasure" that appeared in the Los Angeles Times on November 18, 2013.

November 21, 2013

To the Editor:

Saree Makdisi offers nothing constructive to promote the efforts currently being pursued by Israel and the Palestinians to make progress in the re-started negotiations.  Instead, he provides a distorted, factually flawed and one-sided view the Israeli-Palestinian conflict oozing with contempt towards Israel.

By promoting the myth of a malicious and genocidal plot by the Israeli government to do away with the Palestinian people, Makdisi’s credibility is severely damaged. He uses language so extreme, including “Israel is attempting to grind an entire people into the dust”, that it is difficult to take his scholarship seriously.

Advocating a pro-Palestinian perspective does not require concocting an extreme anti-Israel diatribe, as Makdisi has done here.  His style of advocacy does a disservice to the Palestinian people.
