Letter to The New Yorker re: Ari Shavit's Book

October 22, 2013

Letters to the Editor
The New Yorker

To the Editor:

How sad that your only selection from Ari Shavit’s book, “My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel” was a chapter focusing on the history and tragedy of Lydda.  This selection only serves the political expediency of those who only see the shadows in Israel and Zionism, while ignoring the larger message and broader context of the history of the Jewish state.  What a disservice this does to Mr. Shavit, the State of Israel, Zionism, and indeed all who care about the miraculous creation of a national homeland for the Jewish people out of the ashes of the Holocaust.

I hope that everyone will have an opportunity to read the book.  Shavit does much more than offer an unflinching and honest account of Israel’s history.  His greatest achievement is in his ability to share with his readers a true sense of the light and the beauty and the humanity that is Israel.

Sincerely,

Abraham H. Foxman
National Director
