Met Should Be Commended for Listening to Concerns about Opera

June 29, 2014

Letters to the Editor
The Boston Globe

To the Editor:

We Take exception to your editorial “Met Opera embarrasses itself and cheats its audience by canceling ‘Klinghoffer’ broadcast” (June 22), criticizing the Metropolitan Opera’s decision not to simulcast John Adams’s opera “The Death of Klinghoffer.

The Met deserves to be commended for listening to Jewish groups and members of our family about concerns related to the opera — most importantly, that it romanticizes, justifies, and seeks to “explain” the terrorist murder of our father.

We are strong supporters of the arts and believe that theater and music can play a critical role in examining and understanding significant world events. “The Death of Klinghoffer” does no such thing. Its rationalization of terrorism and false moral equivalencies provide no thoughtfulness, and no insight.

Sincerely,

Lisa Klinghoffer
Ilsa Klinghoffer
