ADL Welcomes Augusta National Golf Club's Decision To Admit First Female Members

New York, NY, August 20, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed Augusta National Golf Club's decision to admit its first female members. The decision ends an 80-year discriminatory policy that excluded women from the members-only club that hosts the Masters tournament every year.

"We are very pleased to see that Augusta National has admitted it first female members," said Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "While long in coming, the golf club's decision to admit women is an affirmation that our country will not tolerate sex-based discrimination.

"We congratulate Secretary Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore on their admission, and we hope that they are the first of many women admitted into this club."

Through education, litigation and legislative advocacy, ADL has long supported equal rights for women and an end to discrimination on the basis of sex, as well as efforts to end discriminatory private club practices.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
