Press Release

ADL Commends President Obama and Secretary Kerry for U.S. Leadership and Moral Clarity on Hamas;

Criticizes Silence of Others

New York, NY, August 1, 2014 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today commended President Obama and Secretary Kerry for the U.S. government’s immediate and unequivocal condemnation of Hamas’s barbaric violation of the ceasefire agreement with Israel, and impassioned call for the immediate and unconditional release of kidnapped Israel Defense Force officer Lt. Hadar Goldin. Despite the tireless efforts from President Obama and Secretary Kerry, Hamas has once again chosen to violate a ceasefire agreement and advance its vicious terrorist campaign against Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Barry Curtiss-Lusher, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

President Obama and Secretary Kerry should be commended for their immediate strong and unequivocal condemnation of Hamas’s violation of the ceasefire and kidnapping of Israeli soldier Lt. Hadar Goldin.

In his remarks, President Obama clearly pointed to Hamas’s violation of the ceasefire as undermining the trust of Israel and the international community, making it difficult to put a ceasefire back together. The President also reiterated his support for Israel’s right to defend itself against missiles and tunnels from Gaza.

America’s leadership and moral clarity about the brutality of Hamas will do more, in the end, to protect human life and to uphold international norms and standards than those who ignore the fundamental vicious nature of Hamas and its determination to prolong this confrontation.

We welcome similar statements from Canada’s Foreign Minister John Baird and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, both of whom condemned Hamas specifically.  The Secretary General also called for the unconditional and immediate release of the captured Israeli soldier.

The silence of European leaders and others is deafening.  The reaction by the European Union was utterly shameful.  In a politically expedient statement issued by its press arm, the E.U. failed to blame Hamas for breaching the ceasefire, failed to mention the killing of two Israeli soldiers and kidnapping of another during the ceasefire, and gave a free pass to Hamas by calling on both sides to continue the ceasefire as if nothing had happened.

In the face of Hamas’s escalating depravity, we hope President Obama and Secretary Kerry will urge America’s allies and friends to finally end the dangerous and hypocritical charade of “moral equivalency” between Israel and Hamas, and join the clear and unequivocal condemnations from the U.S., Canada and the U.N. in efforts to secure Lt. Goldin’s release.
