ADL Condemns Attack On Trappist Monastery Near Jerusalem

New York, NY, September 4, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today strongly condemned an attack on a Trappist monastery outside Jerusalem, which had the earmarks of other recent acts of violence by extremist Israeli Jews.

We stand in solidarity with the monks of the monastery against this heinous act of religious intolerance and hate," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "We appreciate the strong condemnation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his call for the perpetrators to be 'severely punished.'"

The perpetrators set the front door of the monastery on fire and spray painted "Jesus is a monkey" along with pro-settlement slogans on the building's walls. Israeli police suspect that the incident is related to the so-called "price tag" campaign, in which extremist Israeli Jews have vandalized Muslim and some Christian sites with extremist and pro-settler graffiti and in some cases committed arson in a totally unacceptable way of expressing opposition to Israeli government policies.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
