Jerusalem, February 7, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today decried the defacing of the Monastery of the Cross and the Hand-in-Hand Jewish-Arab school in Jerusalem.
The Greek Orthodox monastery was desecrated with graffiti reading “Death to Christians” and “Maccabees of Migron”, while “Death to Arabs” and “Kahane was right” was sprayed outside the bilingual school. The slogans suggest, as with previous incidents, that the attacks were carried out by Jewish extremists.
ADL’s Israel Office issued the following statement:
Incidents like this which have been perpetrated by extremist fringe elements of Israeli society are a moral outrage. Violent and racist slogans directed at any religion or nationality is completely unacceptable. We join with the people of Israel and members of all faiths in expressing our shock at these events, and call for universal respect of all religious and educational institutions.
We are deeply concerned by the recent growth of Jewish extremist acts of violence in Israel, a phenomenon that is antithetical to the country’s democratic and Jewish character and commitment to the rule of the law.
It is important that Israeli officials send a clear message to those who carry out or incite such behavior that they face serious judicial consequences, and ensure that the incident is fully investigated, and the perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of Israeli law.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
