ADL Condemns Vandalism Targeting West Bank Mosques And Military Sites

Jerusalem, September 9, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned a spate of vandalism targeting mosques and Israeli military sites in the West Bank, which are believed to have been perpetrated by extremist Israeli Jews.

ADL's Israel Office issued the following statement:

The violent attacks by Israeli extremists in the West Bank are increasing in frequency and in audacity. We are horrified and outraged by the targeting of mosques and Israeli military installations.

The Israeli government and responsible religious, political, and settler leaders, including the Yesha Council, have spoken out against such attacks in recent days and in past years, but clearly more needs to be done. Every segment of Israeli society, and particularly those in the settler and religious community, must make clear that violence is never acceptable, whatever the grievance, whatever the issue.

On September 5, unidentified perpetrators attacked a mosque in Qusara, smashing windows, setting tires on fire inside, and spraying graffiti. Two days later an Israel Defense Forces base was vandalized, and 13 military vehicles were damaged.

On September 8, graffiti was sprayed on another mosque, in Yatma. It is believed that the perpetrators were angered by the Israeli military's demolition of an illegal settlement outpost in Migron.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
