ADL Deeply Disappointed In Thailand's Recognition Of Palestinian State

New York, NY, January 20, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed deep disappointment with Thailand's recognition of a Palestinian state, calling the move "counterproductive to peace."

"By recognizing a Palestinian state at this moment, Thailand is sending a message to the Palestinians that they do not have to make the tough decisions involving acceptance of Israel as a Jewish state and arrangements for secure borders that are the true guarantees of a lasting peace," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "At this delicate diplomatic moment, Thailand's government took action that is counterproductive to peace."

In a letter to the Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, ADL said that Thailand should not have acted prior to a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Thailand's decision, announced by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, runs counter to the stance of the international community as expressed by the Middle East Quartet.

On September 23, 2011, the Quartet called upon both parties to renew negotiations without delay and without preconditions.

Israel has accepted this call and the Palestinians have not withdrawn their preconditions. Progress has been made recently to restart negotiations under the direction of King Abdullah II of Jordan.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
