ADL: Israeli Government Decision on Children of Migrant Workers “Fulfills an Important Promise”

New York, NY, February 13, 2014…The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the decision by the Israeli government to grant residency status to 221 children of migrant workers, whose standing was left undetermined under a 2010 government decision, saying the move “fulfills an important promise.”

On February 11, Interior Minister Gideon Sa’ar granted residency status to the 221 children explaining that his decision was dictated by both humanitarian concerns and the “core values of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state.”

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

This decision by the Israeli government fulfills an important promise to these children of migrants residing in Israel. The move ends the state of limbo for them and ensures that those young individuals - many of whom were born in Israel and do not know another home - now have the opportunity to build lives for themselves, and are secure in knowing they will not be sent out of Israel.

When this issue arose back in 2010, I met with some of these children.  Their circumstances touched my heart and I spoke out on their behalf, asking the Israeli government to find a way to address this issue in order to best reflect the values of Judaism and the State of Israel. For the sake of all the young individuals involved, we are thankful they will be able to continue to stay with their families in Israel.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
