ADL Welcomes Efforts by the Government of Israel to Address Gender Segregation Issues

New York, NY, May 9, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed efforts by the Government of Israel to address gender segregation in the public sphere, including on public transportation, in government ceremonies, on public airways, by health care providers and at funerals.

On May 8, Israel’s Attorney General, Yehuda Weinstein, sent an advisory to government agencies to act expeditiously the end the “behavior aimed at preventing women from receiving public services with equal conditions.” Israel’s Justice Minister, Tzipi Livni, also announced on her Facebook page that she had instructed the ministry to draft legislation “that will make any segregation of women and their humiliation in a public space a criminal offence.”

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

We welcome the legal initiatives prohibiting the segregation of women in public spaces throughout Israel. This is an important development and many Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have condemned the practices of segregated buses, banning women from speaking at public events, or even delivering eulogies at the funerals of loved ones.

The announcement of concrete guidelines and the enactment of legislation will ensure further protections and equality for Israeli women and reinforce Israel’s strong record of promoting gender equality and the advancement of the status of women.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
