ADL Offers High Holiday Security Resources to Jewish Institutions

New York, NY, August 19, 2013 … In advance of the Jewish High Holidays, which begin in early September this year, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is reaching out to synagogues and Jewish communal institutions across the country to provide information on security preparedness and remind them to “always think security.”

“With the High Holy Days approaching, we would like to remind Jewish institutions as we do each year to always “think security,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “Now is a vital time to confirm that security measures are in place, to ensure the safety of congregants throughout the season and year-round.”

The League has sent a list of best security practices for the High Holidays to synagogues and other Jewish communal institutions. Some of the recommended measures include:

  • Advise local law enforcement of High Holy Day schedules and special events.
  • Ensure that ushers understand their critical role in security matters, and that they are familiar with suspicious activity indicators.
  • Establish procedures for controlling access to community facilities.
  • Encourage staff, leadership, and constituents to trust their instincts if they come across someone or something suspicious.
  • Review event publicity in light of security.

Through its network of 30 regional offices, ADL is also conducting several local security awareness trainings across the country over the next few weeks.

ADL is a longtime leader in security awareness. Many of the League’s resources, including its security manual “Protecting Your Jewish Institution: Security Strategies for Today’s Dangerous World” and a list of “18 Best Practices for Jewish Institutional Security” can be accessed online at www.adl.org/combating-hate/community-security.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
