ADL Calls On U.N. Member States To Walk Out When Iranian President Addresses General Assembly

New York, NY, September 24, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today called on member states of the United Nations to walk out when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addresses the General Assembly this week.

“The fact that Ahmadinejad must be allowed to speak according to U.N. rules in no way means that he should be treated with the normal courtesies given to heads of state,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “As evidenced by his long record of incendiary statements, including his most recent anti-Israel comments after arriving in New York, his hatred toward Jews and the state of Israel knows no bounds.”

No sooner had Mr. Ahmadinejad arrived in New York City than the incendiary rhetoric began to flow. In just the span of a few hours he denied the Jewish historical connection to the land of Israel, called Israel a “fake” regime and implied that the veracity of the Holocaust should be questioned. Those incendiary statements are consistent with many others by Ahmadinejad and other Iranian leaders, including the Supreme Leader, have made in vilifying Jews and the state of Israel.

Mr. Foxman said, “It is time for the international community to stand up and make clear that there cannot be business as usual in the face of such hatred and threatening words.”

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
