ADL: Israel’s Acceptance Into U.N. Regional Group “Removes a Significant Hurdle” to the Jewish State’s U.N. Involvement

New York, NY, December 2, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the announcement that Israel’s status in the WEOG (Western European and Others Group) has been extended to enable the Jewish State to fully participate in U.N. activities in Geneva, the seat of many important bodies, including the Human Rights Council.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

This action removes a significant hurdle to Israel’s full participation in U.N. activity in Geneva.  The U.N. is now closer to the spirit of its charter that calls for the equality of all its member states.

Israel still faces an entrenched, institutionalized, anti-Israel infrastructure at the U.N. and anti-Israel resolutions in the General Assembly and Human Rights Council sail through. But with the new status in WEOG, Israel can finally participate and exercise its full and equal status in these international bodies.

We commend the U.S. - both Congress and the Administration - which have long fought for Israel’s acceptance and fair treatment at the U.N.   We are especially grateful to Ambassador Samantha Power who has worked tirelessly and built on the effort of her predecessors, including the late Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, to promote Israel’s full participation and equal status. We express our appreciation to the other members of WEOG who supported Israel’s membership.

U.N. member-states are organized into five regional groups.  Membership in these groups is a requirement for joining key U.N. bodies, such as the Security Council and U.N. specialized agencies. The Asian Group, where Israel geographically would belong and includes most of the Middle East states, denied membership to Israel. WEOG, whose decision on Israel was unanimous, is the only regional group that has permitted Israeli participation.

In May 2000, Israel was granted WEOG membership in New York.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
