UTAH

Most racist skinheads in Utah are associated with one or more of the following white supremacist prison gangs active in the state: Soldiers of Aryan Culture (SAC), Silent Aryan Warriors (SAW), Fourth Reich, American Peckerwoods and Krieger Verwandt. The two largest are SAC and SAW. Many SAC/SAW members have moved to Roy, Utah, a suburb of Ogden, after being released from prison. The area has become a hotbed of criminal activity associated with white supremacist prison gangs.

American Front
A small cell of the recently resuscitated national racist skinhead group has developed in Utah (see American Front entry under Florida).
December 2005:Robby Wayne Baalman pleaded guilty in Salt Lake City to a federal civil rights charge (interfering with the right of a person to use public streets) in a plea deal over an attack on an African-American man on his way to work. He faces 6-7 years in prison. Baalman admitted that he and two others, David Lance Gardner and Keith Wayne Cotter, against whom he will testify as part of the plea deal, beat and kicked the man as part of an initiation ritual for Baalman into the racist skinhead group American Front. Baalman said that they attacked the man because he was black and also to “raise awareness that skinheads are out there which sent a message that these are our streets, white streets…” Gardner and Cotter await trial.
Silent Aryan Warriors (SAW)
Originated in the Utah State prison system in the 1990s; known for its involvement in the methamphetamine trade. Law enforcement officials have reported a rash of crimes linked to SAW, particularly identity/mail theft, where personal checks are taken from homes and public letter boxes, then “washed” and forged. Mail theft has increasingly been linked to methamphetamine addicts and white supremacist gangs—more than 30 SAC/SAW members have been arrested on methamphetamine and mail fraud charges.

Soldiers of Aryan Culture (SAC)
Also founded in the 1990s, it is the second largest white supremacist prison gang in the Utah state prison system, with approximately 150 members. The group gained significant attention in 2002 when Utah law enforcement officials revealed that they had information suggesting that members of SAC and another prison gang, Krieger Verwandt, were making pipe bombs and intending to use them to attack Jews during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

CAVEAT: NOT EVERY SKINHEAD A RACIST
The skinhead subculture was not originally racist —and, in fact, today around the world there remain many non-racist or explicitly anti-racist skinheads (often called sharps, for “skinheads against racial prejudice”).
