Resolution in Support of Religious Freedom and Against Hate and Bigotry on the Occasion of the Presentation of a 75th Anniversary Medal to Abraham Foxman, National Director of the Anti-Defamation League

April 10, 2006

Whereas: We, the undersigned, support the Boston College Law School non-discrimination policy, which states that the school “is committed to a policy against discrimination and harassment based on age; sex; race; color; religion; national origin or ancestry; sexual orientation; disability; or marital, family or military status” and,

Whereas: Boston College was founded by the Society of Jesus and is based on the Jesuit commitment of dignity of the human person, the advancement of the common good and compassion for the poor, and seeks to train a diverse student body not merely to be good lawyers, but to be lawyers who lead good lives, and who will be prepared to seek and to find meaningful work in service to others that will enrich their communities; and,

Whereas: We have long supported religious freedom for all students on campus and have fought all forms of hatred and bigotry on campus, in our communities, and around the world; and

Whereas: We recognize the historic bias, prejudice and hostility aimed at the Jewish people throughout the centuries and the continuing forms of anti-Semitism that affect the Jewish community and all those who value religious freedom;

Whereas: We affirm that hatred or bigotry against one student or group is hatred against us all.

LET IT THEREFORE BE RESOLVED THAT:

Section 1:  We support the effort to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all.

Section 2:  We support all student groups that celebrate religious freedom and expression, and all student efforts that encourage mutual understanding of our diverse religious traditions and backgrounds.

Section 3:  We urge the student body to fulfill the mission of Boston College Law School to become professionals who find meaningful work in the service to others and their communities by actively fighting against hate and bigotry.

Section 4:  We applaud the Boston College Law School Administration’s support of religious freedom and mutual understanding, and urge the Administration to continue to support and allocate funds to further promote dialogue across the entire BC Law community.
