  • Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed to bolster regional cooperation in counterterrorism. (AP, 10/8/97)

  • Suspected top Japanese Red Army terrorist Nishikawa Jun, 47, was captured in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and sent to Japan. He was allegedly involved in attacks on the French Embassy in the Hague in 1974 and the U.S. Embassy in Malaysia in 1975 and participated in the 1977 hijacking of a Japan Airlines jet en route from Paris to Tokyo.   • Representatives from the U.S., Europe and Israel met at the First International Congress on Terrorism in Argentina. (Reuters, 12/1/97)

  • In Miami, U.S. authorities arrested Ramon Aldasoro Magunacelaya, 41, a fugitive member of the Basque terrorist group ETA, wanted by Spain in connection with several killings in the 1980s. (AP, 12/6/97)

  • United Nations General Assembly has adopted an international convention against terrorist bombings. (UPI, 12/16/97)

  • Greek authorities arrested a former member of Italy's Red Brigades terrorist movement, Enrico Bianco, 45, convicted in absentia in Italy for involvement in the 1978 kidnapping and murder of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro. A Greek judge rejected Bianco's request for political asylum. (Reuters, 12/23/97)
