  • Acting on a tip from American intelligence authorities, Uruguayan police arrested three members of the Egyptian terrorist group Al-Gama'at al-Islamiyya wanted for two bombings in Egypt that killed 80 people. (AFP, 1/30/99)

  • A U.S. Court of Appeals in February 1999 paved the way for the extradition to Spain of accused ETA terrorist Ramon Aldasoro. (Patterns of Global Terrorism 1998, April 1999)

  • France extradited to Germany Hans-Joachim Klein, a former accomplice of international terrorist Carlos the Jackal and wanted for his role in the 1975 kidnapping of OPEC oil ministers in Vienna in which three people were killed. (Reuters, 5/20/99)

  • Meeting in Algeria, African interior and justice ministers agreed on a charter to fight terrorism due to be ratified by leaders of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in July. (Reuters, 6/3/99)

  • The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed to establish a data and information center in Manila to combat regional crime, including terrorism. (Kyodo News Service, 6/23/99)
