  • The U.S. has still not named foreign terrorist groups in accordance with the April 1996 counterterrorism law which would trigger fund-raising and access restrictions for these foreign terrorists and their representatives.

  • According to U.S. intelligence, Russia has provided assistance to Iran's missile program - aid that could speed Iran in developing nuclear capability. The transfer included detailed instructions on how to construct the delivery system for the Russian SS-4 missile as well as some parts for the missile. (AP, 2/12/97)

  • South Africa is planning to sell $650 million worth of weapons to Syria. The U.S. has threatened to impose sanctions on South Africa if it proceeds with the deal. (Reuters, 2/13/97)

  • Russia has gone ahead with an $800 million deal with Iran to construct a nuclear power plant at Bandar-e Bushehr, on the Persian Gulf. (Jewish Telegraphic Agency, 3/27/97)
