- Russia has pledged to strengthen ties with Iran and has increased
cooperation with Teheran in the areas of nuclear and ballistic missile development. (The

spend time in jail despite pleading guilty to illegally obtaining three vials of lethal bubonic

- The French oil firm Total signed a $2 billion contract with Iran to
develop the South Pars gas field along with Russia's Gazprom and Malaysia's
Petronas. Britain's Pell Frischman Group and Canada's Bow Valley Energy Ltd.
entered into a deal with Iran to develop its offshore Balal oil field while Germany's
Westdeutsche Landesbank plans to finance an Iranian company headed by the son of former
President Hashemi Rafsanjani to develop the country's offshore Soroush oil field (Journal

- China sold to Iran cruise missiles that enhance Iran's ability to disrupt
Persian Gulf shipping and challenge U.S. forces there and Beijing has committed to helping

- The Arab League defied U.N. sanctions against Libya by permitting

participating in regional and international meetings" to land on their territory and
