All works are judged using an adapted version of the Nebraska Statewide Writing Rubric for Grade 11 that was developed by the Nebraska Department of Education. Jurors are asked to pay special attention to ideas and voice, and then they are to consider organization and conventions. All Essays are read and scored at least twice.

The jurors for the essay contest are volunteers from the Omaha community including individuals from both the business sector and educational institutions.
