The Work

The work we do

ADL is a leading anti-hate organization that was founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of antisemitism and bigotry. Today, ADL is the first call when acts of antisemitism occur and continues to fight all forms of hate. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education and fighting hate online, ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.

Under the dynamic leadership of our CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, a serial social entrepreneur and change agent, ADL has been invigorated with new approaches, ideas and energy. We remain deeply committed to our mission and take great pride in our 100-plus year history of influence and impact.

Our Culture

The Culture

We are committed to being a highly effective and contemporary organization that achieves long-term success through our culture and talent. We value and foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, respect, courage, accountability and inclusivity. And this isn’t just talk. A full 50 percent of everyone’s performance rating, starting at the top of the organization, is determined by demonstration of the ADL Values.

We hold quarterly “all hands” meetings to share information, provide recognition and answer questions. We have a wellness committee and regularly offer free workshops on health-related topics (e.g., meditation), as well as publish a monthly newsletter. In respect of our colleagues who observe Shabbat, we close at 3:00pm (local time) on Fridays throughout the year. To give ourselves some space at the end of the week to think and work on projects, we encourage no meetings on Fridays. Out of a staff of 350, 44 colleagues were promoted to a higher job grade in 2019, and 39 received promotions in 2020. Everyone at ADL has access to LinkedIn Learning, an award-winning online training platform with a digital library of over 9,000 courses. Our Leader of Culture and DEI helps us maintain our focus and continue to accelerate our progress.

Our Commitment to DEI

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is particularly important to ADL given our mission to stop the defamation of the Jewish people, and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. We are committed to creating a more just and inclusive culture to ensure how we operate internally mirrors the advocacy and education work we do externally in support of our mission.  Not only is it the right thing to do, but we believe such a culture allows each of our colleagues to flourish and contribute at their highest level.

We create annual DEI plans and have:

  • Established a DEI Committee with representation from all levels of the organization
  • Launched Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) based on social identity
  • Required DEI training for all staff
  • Promoted individual accountability for DEI efforts through individual goals setting
  • Enhanced our recruitment strategy and execution to prioritize a diverse and inclusive workforce
  • Increased the ethnic, racial and gender diversity of our national board

And we are committed to:

  • Supporting vendors from marginalized communities
  • Increasing diversity on regional boards

“Working at ADL has given me the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally and has fostered an environment for me to continue my passion for creating welcoming and inclusive spaces for all.”

- Bill, Associate Director of Education (Chicago)

“I came to the ADL because of my passion for anti-bias education. Over the years I have been elevated many times to more expansive roles allowing me to develop my experience into the areas of social justice, policy and management. I was able and encouraged to make these changes all while maintaining focus on my love of education.”

- Erin, Deputy Regional Director (Atlanta)

“I've always considered myself fortunate to have a career at ADL that actually pays me to do work that aligns with my values. ADL's bold mission of fighting hate comes with serious responsibilities, the subject matter can be grim, and it often feels as if the hate is unending. And yet, over the course of my career, I have been blessed to see our many victories - the hearts and minds that we affect every day - and I am as excited and optimistic about my work today as I am the day I began.”

 - Etzion, Director of Regional Operations (New York)

“I now have the privilege of being part of an incredible team of colleagues who support each other, respect each other's opinions even (or especially) when there are differences and acknowledge one another for their efforts. ADL didn't just give me a job; it gave me a place where I feel like I belong -- where I am seen, heard and valued not just as an employee of an organization but as a human being. Therein lies the magic of ADL: a meaningful mission made possible by a community of compassionate people!” - Leslie, Senior Web Producer (New York)
