California White Supremacists Sentenced for Hate Crime Assault

  • October 27, 2008

An Orange County Superior Court Judge sentenced two self-proclaimed white supremacists to six years in state prison.

Ryan Joseph Swanson, 19, of Huntington Beach, and Nicolas Tyler Gibbs, 20, of Anaheim, were each sentenced after pleading guilty on October 22, 2008, to felony counts of aggravated assault, unlawful taking of a vehicle, and misdemeanor battery with serious bodily injury, as well as the sentencing enhancements of committing a hate crime together and causing great bodily injury.

On May 26, 2008, Swanson and Gibbs beat a 24-year-old man in Seal Beach until he was unconscious, and then stomped on him, after the victim told the men that he was half-Salvadoran.

The victim sustained a fractured clavicle, numerous facial wounds, and a concussion. After the attack the men drove off with the victim's car. Swanson and Gibbs, who each have white supremacist tattoos, allegedly called the victim a "dirty…Mexican" before attacking him. Gibbs was in custody for a probation violation at the time of his arrest for this incident.
