Off-Duty Virginia Police Officer Killed During Chase; Suspect has "White Power" Tattoo

  • August 18, 2006

Douglas Michael Brown, Jr., of Barboursville, Virginia, was arrested on August 17, 2006, after a nearly six-day manhunt.  Brown was arrested for charges related to the death of an off-duty police lieutenant.

Lt. James Sears of the Colonial Heights, Virginia, Police Department was fatally injured in a collision in Chesterfield County.  Sears' vehicle was hit head-on early on the morning of August 12, 2006, by a Chesterfield County police officer who was engaged in a high-speed chase at the time.   Sears died in the hospital less than an hour later.

The object of the pursuit was a stolen van allegedly driven by Brown.  Brown, 36, described by police as a career criminal, has the words "white power" tattooed across his abdomen.  He also sports other tattoos, including skulls, skeleton fingers, barbed wire, and an octopus.  He has had five previous felony convictions.

The pursuing officer swerved to avoid another vehicle entering the road, but in doing so, ran into the car driven by Sears, on his way home from the gym at the time.

Brown later crashed the van into a utility pole two miles further on, but fled on foot.

Brown faces a variety of charges in Chesterfield, including felony attempt to elude police, grand larceny of the van, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident. According to police, he may also face charges in Colonial Heights as a result of the crash that killed Lieutenant Sears.
